Case History – Alison* - Fear Of Flying
Usually, I am the first to point out that EFT & NLP are NOT miracle cures. However, I do enjoy my share of one-session wonders with these procedures.
When Alison came to see me, our initial discussion uncovered a particularly rocky flight from her past. It was clear her feelings of intense fear had started only after this incident.
We used an NLP imagination technique to help her feel instantly less intense about the flight, and view it from an objective perspective. This helped her untangle the memory from her emotions associated with it.
She began whooping when I asked her to think about the event now. “It’s the worry that’s gone that I really notice….really weird…. it’s phenomenal!”
To strengthen the change we used a version of the hero technique in which Alison was able to comfortably imagine sitting in the plane as it took off, and mid-flight. This allowed her to ‘step into’ a resource-laden version of herself, and reinforce the refound feelings of control and relaxation. When I probed for anxiety, she said she would feel “quite happy just reading my book thanks”. This is a common reaction, indicating that all the emotional charge of the experience is now resolved.
Although I usually prefer to be extremely thorough in testing results, she insisted that no more work was necessary, and that the event felt “emotionally flat” now.
And, she still had time for a sandwich before going back to work.

Follow-up: 2 weeks later Alison was on a plane to Turkey for her first foreign holiday in a long time. When I asked her about it in passing afterwards she remarked “Oh that old thing….I don’t even think about it anymore”
